And King Herod heard - for his name (Messiah) - came to be well known, and he said: "John the Baptiser has risen out of the dead, therefore these abilities work in him." |
Others were saying: "It is Elijah," others were saying: "A Prophet like one of the Prophets ( Ancient and Divine)." |
But Herod - having heard said: "John who I beheaded, he has risen out of the dead." |
For Herod himself had sent out and arrested John, and bound him in prison through Herodias - his brother, Phillip's wife, for he had married her. |
For John said to Herod: "It is not permissable for you to have your brother's wife," and herodias bore a grudge against him, and desired to kill him - but she was powerless. |
For Herod feared John - knowing that he was a righteous and holy man and he was protecting him. And having heard he was much perplexed but gladly listened to him. |
